On Friday 29 May 2015 Downies held a special event to officially launch their new retail store at Southgate. CEO Ken Downie was on hand to host the launch of the store after relocating from the historic Block Arcade, where it resided for the past 21 years. Guests were given exclusive pre-release access to the latest in the Deadly & Dangerous Silver Coin Series dedicated to the vicious Bull Ant. Downies Coins & Collectables can be found on the upper level.
A contemporary twist on the great Bavarian Beer Halls, Hophaus opened its doors at Southgate in 2014. Drawing inspiration from the history and tradition of the world’s original “craft breweries”, Hophaus celebrates the Germanic approach to brewing, one of both art and science. Southgate launched a brand new centerpiece sculpture for its central atrium, as part of the redevelopment in 2011. Head artist John Meade talks about the concept and creation of the new work from inception to installation, and see never before seen behind the scenes footage of its creation.
